A slab has been found to contain dozens of fossilized footprints dating back to the Early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago.
A slab at a school in Queensland has been found to contain one of the highest concentrations of dinosaur footprints ever documented in Australia, ScienceAlert reports.
The slab had gone unnoticed for about 20 years until school officials asked paleontologist Anthony Romilio to examine it. Romilio said the slab, which is less than one square meter in area, contained 66 individual footprints.
The footprints date back to the Early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago, a time period from which no fossilized dinosaur bones have been found in Australia.
Detailed coverage of the Queensland rock specimen
The stone ended up at the school after coal miners dug up the slab in 2002 and, noticing unusual markings, donated it to the school, where it was later displayed in the foyer.
The find was published in the international scientific journal Historical Biology.
